Together with our international colleagues, we initiated and coordinate the pan-European research program Technology and societal challenges 1800-2050. The program is coordinated by Erik van der Vleuten on behalf of the Tensions of Europe managament committee.
Our Sustainable Urban Mobility/ Cycling Cities program works with local governments and stakeholder organizations to develop historically-informed policy studies supporting today’s sustainable urban mobility transition. Why did motorized traffic historically replace sustainable walking and cycling, and how can the latter be empowered today to create a more sustainable future?
The book Kwetsbare Welvaart 1850-2050 by Harry Lintsen, Jan Pieter Smits, Frank Veraart and John Grin interprets Dutch history from a well-being and sustainability perspective. It is widely read by policy makers and others working to replace GDP by well-being and sustainability as a guideline for national policy. The English version is Open Access available here.
Our textbook on engineering and societal challenges ca. 1800-today has reached over 10.000 engineering students in Eindhoven and elsewhere.
