Taiwan and the Netherlands met centuries ago. In 1624 Dutch pioneers set foot on Formosa and familiarized with its people. Reverend and merchant had led the way, naval guns and firearms had cleared it. It was not an easy acquaintance. Half a globe revealed a world of differences. Taiwan and the Netherlands would continue to meet in the centuries that followed. Differences became visible, but also common ground and similarities. This book describes some of those encounters. From the very beginning to the present day.

A group of international authors shows how two places on earth became connected, marveled at each other, learned from each other. Over twenty stories give a unique view of long-term connections from a Taiwanese and Dutch perspective. From Christianization to computer chips and from Spanish mackerel to modern Dutch architecture near an old VOC river.
