On 14 December, Erik van der Vleuten participated, on personal invitation, in the College van Rijksadviseurs Toekomstatelier2100 workshop on cargo, resources, and the circular economy. In Toekomstatelier2100 the national government advisors explore the contours and challenges of Dutch society in the year 2100, and the implications for present-day policy.

In his spoken column, Erik ‘looked back in order to look forward’ and argued for an open-ended and inclusive (also including non-Global North voices) visioning process; transition processes have never been, and will never be, predictable and straightforward, and simple extrapolation of current trends into the future is a risky and error-prone strategy.
